Common Sim Hub Problems and Troubleshooting

One of the reasons Sim Hub has become so popular is its flexibility. The same flexibility that allows builders to create custom dashboards, haptics, wind simulators, LEDs, and button boxes can also create challenges when something isn’t working as expected. The good news is that most Sim Hub issues are caused by a small number of common problems.

START WITH THE BASICS

When troubleshooting any Sim Hub project, start with the simplest possibilities first.

Ask yourself:
• Is the device powered?
• Is the USB cable connected?
• Is the correct COM port selected?
• Is Sim Hub detecting the device?
• Is the game actively sending telemetry?

Many issues can be solved before touching wiring or settings.

PROBLEM: ARDUINO NOT DETECTED

Possible causes include:
• Incorrect USB cable
• Missing drivers
• Incorrect COM port selection
• Faulty USB connection

If SimHub cannot see the controller, no hardware connected to that controller will function.

PROBLEM: WRONG ARDUINO ASSIGNED

As systems become larger, many builders begin using multiple Arduino boards.

Examples may include:
• Wind simulation
• Pedal haptics
• LEDs
• Dashboards

Incorrect assignments can cause outputs to appear on the wrong hardware or not function at all.

PROBLEM: NO HAPTIC FEEDBACK

Check:
• Power supply connections
• Motor driver wiring
• Arduino output assignments
• Effect configuration

Many times the issue is not the hardware itself, but an output that has not been assigned correctly.

PROBLEM: PWM DEVICES NOT RESPONDING

PWM-controlled devices such as:
• Wind simulation fans
• Vibration motors
• Certain LED systems

require compatible output pins and correct configuration.

PROBLEM: EFFECTS FEEL WEAK OR INCONSISTENT

Questions to consider:
• Is the effect intensity too low?
• Is the telemetry source active?
• Is another effect masking the sensation?
• Is the hardware mounted securely?

Poor mounting can significantly reduce the effectiveness of immersion hardware.

PROBLEM: TOO MANY EFFECTS ENABLED

New users often enable every available effect.

The result can be:
• Muddy feedback
• Overlapping sensations
• Confusing signals
• Difficulty identifying important information

More effects do not automatically create more immersion.

PROBLEM: GAME TELEMETRY NOT WORKING

Verify:
• Game support
• Telemetry settings inside the game
• Sim Hub game detection
• Restart Sim Hub and the game

Without telemetry, Sim Hub has no information to send to connected devices.

PROBLEM: POWER SUPPLY ISSUES

Symptoms may include:
• Devices disconnecting
• Weak motor output
• Random resets
• Inconsistent performance

As systems expand, dedicated power supplies often become necessary.

PROBLEM: MULTIPLE HARDWARE TYPES COMPETING

As rigs become more advanced, builders often combine:
• Bass shakers
• Vibration motors
• Wind simulation
• LEDs

The solution is often assigning specific jobs to specific devices.

For example:
• Bass shakers for engine and road texture
• Vibration motors for ABS and wheel slip
• Wind simulation for speed
• LEDs for visual alerts

Each device should have a purpose.

TROUBLESHOOTING IS PART OF DIY

Every DIY builder eventually encounters problems. Start simple. Change one variable at a time. Verify assumptions before replacing hardware.

BUILD RELIABLE BEFORE BUILDING BIGGER

A small system that works consistently is far more valuable than a large system that is difficult to diagnose.

At GSC Immersion Lab, we believe troubleshooting is not a setback—it is part of the learning process that helps builders better understand their hardware and create more reliable immersion systems.

In the next article, we’ll explore Custom Serial Devices and how advanced builders push beyond standard SimHub hardware configurations.
